Calling all Europhiles! We're seeking new trustees

Updated: Jun 24, 2022

Do you care about our shared European cultural heritage and want to take an active role in promoting links between the UK and Europe? Europa Nostra UK (ENUK) is the UK arm of Europa Nostra, the pan-European federation of heritage NGOs, covering 42 countries. We aim to:

● nurture enthusiasm for our shared European cultural heritage

● articulate the values and ideas that connect us to our colleagues in Europe

● raise the profile of ENUK in order to support Europa Nostra’s Europe-wide representation

● foster links and co-operation with other European heritage bodies in civil society and beyond

● sustain UK participation in shaping European heritage policy and vice versa

ENUK is currently looking for new trustees to join its governing committee. We run on a totally voluntary basis, so we need trustees who are prepared to initiate and lead on new ideas/projects and also to take responsibility for delivering our existing activities (which include producing the Newsletter, putting on events, maintaining the website etc.)

This year we are specifically looking for trustees to take on the following tasks:

  • editing the quarterly ENUK Newsletter (using Mailchimp)

  • coordinating UK support prestigious Europa Nostra Awards (which includes liaising with Europa Nostra in The Hague, promoting applications from the UK, finding awards assessors, and promoting UK winners)

  • maintaining the ENUK website

  • fundraising

In addition, we are looking for a trustee to lead on our growing work with our Young Members. At present a third of ENUK’s membership is made up of Young Members (free for those between 18 and 33) and we have an Young Member Programme which provides networking opportunities, careers advice, and access to leaders in the heritage sector, which we would like to expand.

You do not have to be a current member of Europa Nostra in order to be nominated to become a trustee but you would be expected to join. We are particularly keen to encourage younger applicants in line with our commitment to involving our Young Members in the leadership of our organisation. Becoming a trustee of ENUK offers an excellent opportunity to gain experience in charity governance and will allow you to expand your skills and professional networks. You don’t need to have any previous experience of being a trustee in order to join our committee as we will ensure that you are supported by existing trustees.

The committee currently meets about 6 times a year and meetings are generally held online towards the end of the working day. We also have an annual AGM which takes place in person and is combined with an educational programme and networking. We encourage trustees to attend this event as it is our opportunity to meet our members and strengthen our relationships.

If this appeals to you then please contact our chair, Sara Crofts (europanostrauk@gmail.com) with a cv and short statement setting out why you are interested and what you would bring to the Committee by 20 July 2022. Dr Jamie Davies, an existing trustee and Young Member, is also happy to have an initial chat with any Young Members who are interested in becoming a trustee.
