The Gowers Report - 70 Years On
In 1950, a report was published that saved a great many of the UK's country houses. During the war, many country houses were reused for public services, such as schools and hospitals. On the return to private use, owners of these houses were left with large repair requirements that would cost a great deal. As a result, many of the UK's great country houses were demolished or left to decay.
As a great saviour of our country house heritage, Historic Houses takes a look at the impact of the Report and collates a series of interesting documents and videos to further our understanding of this influential document.
